Violin Making Classes at Warwickshire College FAQ
This is the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page for our feature article on violin making classes which Derek Roberts teaches at Warwickshire College.
Who are the classes suitable for? Anyone
who wishes to make or restore a violin, viola or cello under the
guidance of a professional violin maker.
How long does the course last? This
is a part-time course of evening classes, one evening a week during term time. There are 3 terms of 10
evening classes each during the academic year. You can join the
course at any time, for one or more terms.
If you are interested in a short full-time course, look at Derek's
Violin Making Courses held in his own workshop.
When are the classes held? Thursday
evenings from 7pm to 9pm during term time.
Where are the classes held? At Warwickshire
College, Leamington Spa, in the Woodworking department.
How much does it cost? The fees are
set by the college and are approximately £100 for the year,
or pro rata for a term.
Do I need specialist tools? All the
tools you need are provided in the college workshop. If you want
to continue work at home you may need to get some tools.
What about materials? Derek will advise
you on the materials you need and where to obtain them.
These include a maple wedge for the back,
a maple scroll block and ribs,
spruce for the front,
and plywood for a mould.
You will not need to buy everything at once.
Do I have to be a skilled woodworker?
No, anyone can benefit from the class. If you already have woodworking
skills you will probably make faster progress.
How long will it take to complete a violin?
It varies - everyone works at their own pace. Some people work on their violin at home,
others work only in the classes. Most people take more than one year.
Why can't I find the course in the college
prospectus? The official name for the course is String
Instrument Making and Repair. Sometimes it's not mentioned in
college publications.
Can I visit a class before joining?
You are welcome to visit; please contact Derek
Roberts first to arrange this.
